Today on Europe Day we celebrate French Foreign Minister Robert Schuman's declaration in 1950 to his fellow European partners, proposing to pool sovereignty in the coal and steel industries.

This laid the foundations for the creation of the European project and our longest period of peace and created the world's largest economic bloc with more than half a billion citizens.
